Astrophotography on a phone sits in an awkward place. Half the articles about it promise your iPhone can shoot the galaxy, and half insist you need a dedicated camera and a star tracker before you bother. Neither helps when you are standing in a field at midnight trying to figure out what to press.

This guide is the honest middle: what an iPhone genuinely captures in the night sky, what it does not, why Night mode is not the tool people assume, and how to set up a real long exposure.

Night Mode Is Not a Long Exposure

This is the single most useful thing to understand, because it explains most of the frustration people run into.

Night mode is automatic. The iPhone reads the scene, decides how long to gather light, and merges a burst into one image. You do not choose the duration or the ISO, and you cannot tell it to keep going. It is a very good system for a dim street or a restaurant table.

A long exposure is a different intent. You are recording how something changed over a stretch of time: stars drifting into arcs, a meteor crossing the frame, an aurora shifting shape. The duration is the subject. Night mode has no concept of that, and the stock Camera app does not expose shutter speed at all, on any current iPhone including the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. What an iPhone Can Actually Do

Set expectations here and the rest of the night gets much easier.

Star trails. The strongest fit. The Earth rotates, so a long enough exposure turns points of light into arcs, and arcs are large, bright, and forgiving. Meteor showers. Nobody can predict where the next meteor will appear, so the method is statistical: point at a wide patch of sky, run long exposures back to back, and let the odds work. The Perseids peak on the night of 12 to 13 August 2026, near new moon, so the sky stays dark. The Geminids peak on the night of 13 to 14 December 2026, with sources putting the rate up to around 150 meteors per hour under ideal conditions: dark sky, clear air, and time for your eyes to adjust.

Aurora. Viewing season in the northern hemisphere runs roughly from September through March, and you need dark skies and high enough latitude. Aurora moves more slowly than a meteor but faster than the stars: too long an exposure smooths out the folds and curtains that make it interesting, too short and there is not enough light. Expect to experiment on the night.

Moonlit landscapes. These photograph well because there is real light to work with. The moon itself is harder, being small in a wide lens and far brighter than its surroundings.

What It Cannot Do

An iPhone will not give you the kind of image that comes from a telescope or a tracked astro rig. Faint deep sky objects, planetary surface detail, and tightly resolved star fields are outside what a phone lens and sensor deliver.

Light pollution is a hard limit rather than a software problem. From a lit suburb the sky itself glows, and a longer exposure records more of that glow along with the stars. Driving out of town does more for your astrophotography than any setting change.

Stacking frames is also not tracking. It builds light and cuts noise, but it does not stop the sky from moving.

Setting Up for a Night

  1. Get away from lights. The biggest single variable. Even a modest drive changes what is visible.
  2. Steady the phone. With a frame stacking app each frame is exposed normally, so handheld work does not fall apart the way a single long exposure would, but for long sky exposures a small tripod earns its place.
  3. Choose the blend mode for the subject. Lento's Light Trail mode uses lighten blending, keeping the brightest pixels from each frame, which is what you want for star trails and meteors. Smooth mode averages frames instead, better suited to water and cloud.
  4. Set ISO by hand. Lento's range is 100 to 3200. Darker skies push you higher, but higher ISO means more noise, so find the lowest setting that still shows stars.
  5. Focus manually. Autofocus fails on a dark sky. Set focus once at distance and leave it.
  6. Use the timer. A 3 or 10 second delay keeps your finger from shaking the frame at the start.
