Everyone who has tried to photograph lightning knows the feeling. The sky lights up, you jab the shutter button, and the photo shows a dark cloud with nothing in it. You were half a second late, and half a second is an eternity here.

Safety Comes Before the Photo
Shoot from inside a building or from inside a car with the windows up. Those are the two positions worth using. A closed vehicle protects you because the metal shell carries current around the occupants, not because of the tires, so rolling the window down defeats the point.
What to avoid:
- Open ground. Fields, beaches, parking lots, ridgelines, anywhere you are the tallest thing around.
- Tall metal objects. Fences, light poles, flagpoles, scaffolding. Do not set up next to one and do not touch one.
- Water. Docks, pools, and the edge of a lake are bad places to stand during a storm.
A shot through a window is a real photograph. Standing in a field holding a tripod is not worth it. If the thunder follows the flash closely, the storm is close, and that is the moment to move indoors rather than to walk further out.
Why You Cannot Time a Strike by Hand
A lightning flash is shorter than human reaction time. By the time your eye registers the light and your finger moves, the strike is finished, so pressing the shutter at a flash records the aftermath rather than the bolt.
So photographers stopped trying. The classic method is to keep the shutter open for a stretch of time and point the camera where strikes are repeating. When a bolt fires during that window, it writes itself into the frame. You are not catching the lightning. You are holding a frame open and waiting for it to arrive. Most exposures come back empty, some come back with one clean bolt, and occasionally two or three land together.
The Problem With the Built In Camera App

Settings for Lightning

Shooting through a window also means every drop and smear on the glass becomes part of the picture, so wipe the inside and pick a pane the rain is not hitting. Turning off the room lights behind you kills reflections, the single biggest improvement most indoor storm shots get.

Lightning frames have brutal dynamic range: the bolt sits near the top of the scale and the sky near the bottom, in one image. A compressed JPEG throws away much of the room you need to pull it back.
