If you upgraded to an iPhone 17 or 17 Pro expecting to finally shoot silky waterfalls and car light trails straight from the camera app, this is the part nobody mentions in the keynote: the stock Camera app still has no shutter speed control. Not on the iPhone 17. Not on the 17 Pro. Not on iOS 26.
The assumption is reasonable. Every year the cameras get better, so surely at some point the manual controls show up. They haven't. What did improve is real and it does help your long exposure shots, just not in the way most people assume.
What the iPhone 17 Lineup Actually Changed
Apple introduced four phones on September 9, 2025: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, all on A19 series chips. The camera hardware differs across the lineup:
- iPhone 17 carries two 48MP rear lenses.
- iPhone 17 Air has a single 48MP rear camera and no ultra-wide, which matters if you like to shoot sweeping landscapes or get close to a foreground rock while keeping the whole waterfall in frame.
- iPhone 17 Pro Max uses a three camera system.
- All four models share an 18MP Center Stage front camera.
Those are genuine upgrades. More resolution and better glass give you cleaner files to work with. But resolution is not exposure time, and that distinction is the whole story here.
What Didn't Change: No Manual Shutter Speed
Open the Camera app on an iPhone 17 Pro and look for a way to say "keep the shutter open for eight seconds." There isn't one. The exposure slider adjusts brightness, not duration. Night mode picks its own exposure length and you don't get to override that decision.

Why a Better Sensor Doesn't Produce a Long Exposure
It helps to separate two things that both get called "camera quality." The first is how much detail and how little noise a single frame contains, which is where sensors and lenses matter, and where the iPhone 17 line makes gains.
The second is how much time the image represents. A long exposure photo isn't a sharper version of a normal photo, it's a photo of a duration. The blur in a waterfall shot is not detail the sensor failed to resolve, it's the record of water moving while the shutter stayed open. No sensor improvement can add time that was never captured, which is why the fix has to happen at the capture layer.
How Long Exposure Works on iPhone Instead
Since iPhones can't hold a shutter open for seconds at a time the way a DSLR can, apps take a different route: they record a continuous stream of normally exposed frames and combine them into one image.

Where the New Hardware Does Help
Better per-frame quality feeds directly into stacked results, because the stack is only as clean as the frames going into it. Sharper optics and lower noise per frame mean a smoother final image, particularly in dim scenes where each frame is working hard.
Lens choice matters too. Long exposure subjects tend to be scenes rather than objects: a coastline, a city street, a river. An ultra-wide gives you framing options a single lens phone doesn't, worth knowing if you're weighing the 17 Air against the others.
Chip generation matters less than you'd think. GPU frame stacking is efficient enough that Lento runs on any iPhone XR or newer with iOS 18, where Metal 2 support begins. Every iPhone 17 clears that bar, but so does a much older phone.
The Live Photo Route and Its Ceiling
Apple does ship one long exposure feature, tucked away in Photos. Shoot a Live Photo, open it, tap the Live menu in the corner, and choose Long Exposure. It's free and it works.
The limits are structural. It uses only about three seconds of footage, the effect is applied after the fact rather than composed while you shoot, there are no manual controls, and there's no RAW file at the end.
