The first thing every long exposure guide tells you: get a tripod. And for traditional photography with a DSLR and an open shutter, that is correct. Camera shake during a 10-second exposure ruins the image.
But computational long exposure works differently. And on iPhone, you can often skip the tripod entirely.
Why Frame Stacking Is Different
Traditional long exposure opens the shutter for seconds or minutes. Any camera movement during that time becomes blur across the entire image.
Frame stacking captures many short exposures (1/30th of a second each) and blends them together. Each individual frame is sharp because the shutter speed is fast enough to freeze camera shake. The blending algorithm then combines these sharp frames into the long exposure effect.

Handheld Techniques That Work
The Wall Brace
Press the edge of your phone against a wall, tree, or railing. This eliminates most hand shake while keeping you mobile. Works well for waterfall shots from viewing platforms that do not allow tripods.
The Two-Hand Lock
Hold your phone with both hands, tuck your elbows into your body, and breathe slowly. This is the least stable option but works for short captures (5-15 seconds) in bright conditions.
The Bag Rest
Set your phone on a backpack, jacket, or camera bag on a flat surface. Angle it with a wallet or small object underneath. This gives you tripod-like stability without carrying extra gear.
The Timer Trick
Use the self-timer (3 or 10 seconds) to start capture. This avoids the shake from tapping the shutter button, which is often the biggest source of blur in the first few frames.
What Works Handheld vs. What Needs a Tripod
Handheld-friendly:
- Waterfalls and streams (5-15 seconds with wall brace)
- Crowd removal at landmarks (15-30 seconds with bag rest)
- Short light trails in bright conditions (10-20 seconds)
- Cloud movement on windy days (10-30 seconds)
Tripod recommended:
- Star trails (5+ minutes, any shake is visible)
- Extended light trails at night (60+ seconds)
- Architectural shots requiring pixel-sharp detail
- Any capture over 60 seconds
Settings for Handheld Shooting
Keep duration short. Start with 5 seconds and work up. The longer the capture, the more your hands accumulate drift.
Avoid max zoom. Zoom amplifies shake. Shoot at 1x and crop later if needed.
Lower ISO in daylight. Fast individual frame shutter speeds combined with low ISO give each frame the best starting quality.
Use continuous autofocus. If your hands shift slightly, AF can compensate. Only switch to manual focus if you are braced and stable.
When to Just Bring the Tripod
If you are planning a dedicated shoot (sunset at a specific location, nighttime cityscape from a rooftop), bring a small phone tripod. They weigh under 200g and fit in a jacket pocket. The stability difference is significant for captures over 30 seconds.
But for spontaneous moments (a beautiful stream on a hike, interesting traffic patterns while exploring a city, a crowded landmark while traveling), handheld frame stacking gives you long exposure results that were impossible before computational photography.
